What effect has feminism had on Canadian education since the 1970 Royal Commission on the Status of Women, and to what end? Transforming Conversations explores post-commission feminist thought and action in the contexts of primary, secondary, post-secondary, and adult education. In this volume, teachers, professors, and educational administrators – many trailblazers themselves – document the historical experiences and outcomes of feminist action in university faculties of education, departments of educational administration, academic and professional societies, teachers’ unions, and community groups over the past five decades. They begin by exploring liberal feminism as an initial response to the historical context in which female educators spoke up for women’s rights and reshaped formal education systems. The contributors further explore how feminist theory was reconceptualized as women moved into formal leadership roles across education sectors. Faced with an increasingly diverse student population, an expanding field of gender scholarship, and an academic emphasis on multidisciplinarity, social science professors often struggle to address and integrate such a broad array of gender issues in their courses. This book addresses that challenge by increasing students' understandings of gender relations in multiple social fields across time and space. Gender Relations in Global Perspective is truly multidisciplinary. It is partially drawn from the work of sociologists, but articles written by gender scholars from the disciplines of cultural studies, history, political science, geography, and literary theory are also included. The readings examine historically persistent, cross-culturally relevant, and empirically grounded concerns such as men's position in the family and women's relationship to work, media, and the global economy, as well as the gendered problems of violence, sexuality and reproduction, and racism. In the past few decades, the narrow intellectual foundations of the university have come under serious scrutiny. Previously marginalized groups have called for improved access to the institution and full inclusion in the curriculum. Reshaping the University is a timely, thorough, and original interrogation of academic practices. Rauna Kuokkanen argues that attempts by universities to be inclusive are unsuccessful because they do not embrace indigenous worldviews.
