Book Description

Excerpt from Worship in the Church of England The following Work owes its immediate origin to the incidents of the last Parliamentary Session, but the opinions which it expresses are the results of many years' thought and reading. I have in my first chapter explained the reasons which have induced me, a layman, to take up the question, as well as the point of view from which I regard it, and I need not therefore. CHURCH OF ENGLAND (CLASSIC REP

Book Description

Excerpt from The Church of England Their fathers. Its faith, preached as univers ally true and necessary for salvation, its Worship, impressively carried out, struck their imagination and gained their assent. This Christianity was one. There was no thought that Christians could be Christian in different ways, or as members of different communions. Even when there were disputes and misunderstandings, as there were at first between English and Celtic Christians in England, they were at one in principle. The only dispute was as to the true following of the rule which all agreed must exist they would never have consented to differ in belief or in the organization of their Church. This unity was the lesson that had been impressed upon Christians by great doctrinal struggles through which agreement in faith had been reached, and by the training in uniformity of administration which they had received from the Roman Empire, under which their system had grown up and after whose pattern it had been largely shaped. In theory and in practice there was one faith and one organization, though the former might not always be intelligently held nor the latter efficiently administered. The Book of Common Worship (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from The Book of Common Worship Among those Churches of the Lord Jesus Christ which follow the Presbyterian rule and order, Liberty of Worship has been esteemed a most precious privilege and inheritance; and while they have been both fearless and faithful to uphold it, against the intrusion of superstitious and burdensome ceremonies, they have also been diligent to seek, in the Public Services of Religion, the golden mean between a too great laxity and a tyrannical uniformity. Such things as are of Divine Institution they have observed in every Ordinance; and other things they have endeavoured to set forth "according to the Rules of Christian Prudence, agreeable to the general Rules of the Word of God." Although the Books of Common Order, which were prepared for the Reformed Churches, at the beginning, in all countries, contained both prayers and other forms, yet were those books not so much imposed by way of inflexible regulation, as they were offered and accepted as profitable Aids to Worship; and they not only permitted but encouraged the exercise of Free Prayer. In a like spirit the Directory for Worship, adopted at a later time by the Church of Scotland, for the sake of unity with their brethren in the Church of England, so far from establishing an invariable form of Public Worship, expressly provided for a liberty of variation; and it did not in any way prohibit the use of prepared orders and prayers, conformable to the general directions given therein. The same wise and blessed liberty is maintained in the Presbyterian Church in the United States of America even to this day. Book of Worship With Hymns and Tunes (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Book of Worship With Hymns and Tunes AT the meeting of the General Synod at Canton, in 1893, two Com mittees, of five members each, were appointed, one to revise the Hymns, the other the Tunes, of our Book of Worship, the two Committees to act in co operation. At the next convention of the General Synod, these Committees reported as instructed, giving the plan of their proceedings as well as their results. These may be found printed in the Minutes of the Convention at Hagerstown, Md., in 189 5. At that time they were authorized to complete their nearly finished work and hand it over to the Hymn Book Publishing Committee for publication, allowing the Church three months more for sug gestions. Careful attention was given to all the suggestions - very few in number - which were offered. The delay in publication has arisen not from any want of harmony in the Committees on the work, but from the nature of the case, and, largely, from the difficulties connected with securing the right to use hymns and tunes that were copyright property. Care has been taken to give correctly the names and dates of the authors of hymns and tunes, and where the original text of hymns has been changed, this is indicated by the letter a (altered). In many cases the number of stanzas has been lessened. In a number of instances familiar hymns have alternate, unnumbered tunes attached.
