A Memorial (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from A Memorial The purpose of this book is fulfilled if it reaches those who knew and loved Mr. Dennison and those who know his spirit and love the work which embodies it. To such, any true attempt to put into permanent form an account of his life is its own excuse. The truth of the picture is of paramount importance. Seen only through another's eyes it would of necessity lose some of its life and value; what may be proper biographical form has therefore been sacrificed to allow a more than liberal introduction of Mr. Dennison's letters. To some the man will be known and the letters new; to them their reading will be a delight. To many, however, the man is hardly more than a tradition; for them there will be no way to gain so full an appreciation of his personality as by seeing for themselves the letters in which it found expression. It may with good reason be believed that a knowledge of his character will offer greater inspiration than that of many more famous men; for he had no talent or virtue unattainable by any normal man. Perpetual Light

Book Description

Excerpt from Perpetual Light: A Memorial I think that is the truth. This is the only means I have at present of acknowledging publicly the vast debt I owe to her. As I turn these poems over - if they are even to be called poems - I realize that they can never begin to express what 'her personality was. The earliest ones were written by a boy who was in love, and the latest by a man who has suddenly stepped into the dark. Those between are fragments from the days when we were struggling along together at the everyday tasks and outside interests and dreams that possessed us. The war entered our lives to change them in September, 1917. The poem, Man Possessed, was written within sound of her actual voice, the others all in absence from her at various times and in moods made strange by absence. And yet this is all I have at present to give in her memory. But I hold by these because - though they are poor, freakish fragments as far as any real expression of her is concerned - they were made for her. George W. Eaton, D.D., LL. D

Book Description

Excerpt from George W. Eaton, D.D., LL. D: A Memorial But, when search was made for literary remains, it was found that, with the exception of two addresses and the two sermons which are given here, nothing of permanent value was available. Large quantities of manuscripts were turned over, but they were only scraps. Nothing was complete. His habits of thought were his own. After the merest suggestion of a theme, immediately committed to paper, he seemed to need nothing else. The subject entered into his thinking in such a way that further writing was needless. He was ready when the occasion came. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. George Fitch

Book Description

Excerpt from George Fitch: A Memorial But Knox College, after all, does not care to deprive any sister institution of her share in the glory of Siwash. The genius of Fitch made the atmosphere and spirit of that institution too typical and too comprehensive to be segregated on the Galesburg campus. What Knox is proud of is the fact that George Fitch is one of her sons; that by the quality of his work as a writer he won a distinct and a distinguished place in literature, a unique position among American humorists; and most of all that in his life, both public and private, he exemplified standards and' ideals which can bring only honor to the institution which had a part in the equipment and training for his work.
