Excerpt from A Memorial The purpose of this book is fulfilled if it reaches those who knew and loved Mr. Dennison and those who know his spirit and love the work which embodies it. To such, any true attempt to put into permanent form an account of his life is its own excuse. The truth of the picture is of paramount importance. Seen only through another's eyes it would of necessity lose some of its life and value; what may be proper biographical form has therefore been sacrificed to allow a more than liberal introduction of Mr. Dennison's letters. To some the man will be known and the letters new; to them their reading will be a delight. To many, however, the man is hardly more than a tradition; for them there will be no way to gain so full an appreciation of his personality as by seeing for themselves the letters in which it found expression. It may with good reason be believed that a knowledge of his character will offer greater inspiration than that of many more famous men; for he had no talent or virtue unattainable by any normal man.
