A Monograph of the British Spongiadæ, Vol. 1 (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from A Monograph of the British Spongiadae, Vol. 1 The British sponges alone have afforded me a very exten sive series of new and beautiful forms of organization, and as my knowledge of the number of the Species and the peculi arities of their structure became extended, I quickly became aware that the list of our native species contained represent atives of nearly every known genus of these animals, and that such an extension of my investigation as that published in the present volume became absolutely necessary to com plete the terminology not only of the British species already described, but those also which the future researches of naturalists may make known to us. A Monograph of the British Spongiadæ, Vol. 1 (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from A Monograph of the British Spongiadae, Vol. 1 In treating a subject so new, and to a great extent so obscure, as the 'History of the Spongiadae, ' it may reasonably be deemed necessary that the author should explain to his readers the origin and object of the work which he presents to them. The highly interesting and valuable researches of Professor Grant in the unexplored field of their anatomy and physiology published in the 'Wernerian Memoirs, ' and in the 'Edinburgh New Philosophical Journal, ' and the labours of Dr. Johnston, in collecting and identifying the species described by numerous authors, ably concluded and published in his 'History of British Sponges, ' in 1842, naturally created an interest in these singular creatures that had never before been excited to so great an extent, and which led naturalists to believe that a new and pleasing field of investigation lay before them. A Monograph of the British Spongiadæ, Vol. 4

Book Description

Excerpt from A Monograph of the British Spongiadæ, Vol. 4: Supplementary The editor has not given any synonymy or re ferences regarding the Calcareous Sponges in the body of the work; to have done this would have necessitated a complete revision of the species, and he refers the student to the Appendix, where will be found a sum mary of the views of Haeckel. With respect to the habitats to which the editor's own initial (n.) is attached, indicating thereby that the specimens referred to have either been collected by himself or are in his cabinet, he has thought it advisable only to record the localities of such speci mens as have actually passed through Dr. Bowerbank's hands and been identified by him. It must be under stood, however, that this remark only applies to those habitats which have the initial N. After them; not necessarily to such as are recorded on the authority of other naturalists, unless either the record is in inverted commas without any name after it, thus showing that the note is Dr. Bowerbank's, or it is expressly stated that he had determined the specimens.
