An Introduction to Zoology, Vol. 1 of 2 (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from An Introduction to Zoology, Vol. 1 of 2 The Object of the present Work is to set forth the Divine Wisdom and goodness as displayed in the animate creation. With this View, the Author has endeavoured so to divest it of mere technicalities as to be intelligible and interesting to general readers, and, at the same time, to render it not unsuited as a manual to those who wish to enter upon the study Of Zoology as a science. He has not, therefore, confined himself to the biography of animals, how ever amusing, but has aimed to shew the amazing diversity in the details of animal structure; its per fect adaptation to required functions; the modification of organs common to various forms; the develope ment of intelligence; and the union of all into a grand whole, so perfect, so beautifully consistent, that none but an All-wise Mind could have contrived, none but an Almighty Hand could have created it. An Introduction to Zoology, Vol. 2 of 2 (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from An Introduction to Zoology, Vol. 2 of 2 In consequence of their small amount of respira tion, Reptiles are cold-blooded; that is, their blood is scarcely warmer than the temperature of the at mosphere at any given time. They, therefore, do not need such a covering as hair, wool, or feathers, to retain animal heat; and for defence a naked skin is sufficient, which in some is hardened into horny plates, or scales. An Introduction to Zoology (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from An Introduction to Zoology The many things that we encounter in our everyday life we soon learn to divide into two more or less sharply contrasted groups, the living and the non-living. This classification is a fundamental one, and when we come to the Sciences, that is, the ordered and intensive study of these things with a view to under standing them and explaining them, we find that they also fall into two corresponding fairly distinct categories, the Physical Sciences, treating of non-living things, and the Biological Sciences, concerned with living things. The two groups differ not only in their content, but, as the nature of this is dissimilar, the methods in which they can be investigated, that is to say, the technique, is also different in the two cases. Biology is the branch of science that treats Of living things in their manifold relations with one another and with non-living things. Living beings are generally recognised as being divided into Plants and Animals, and while, as a matter of fact, we find a certain amount of overlapping between the two when we study them in detail, this is a moderately clear cut division, to correspond with which Biology may be subdivided into Botany, the study of plants, and Zoology, the studv of animals. The present book is concerned with the latter, namely Zoology, or more accurately with some aspects of it as illustrated by certain type forms treated in an elementary manner. Handbook of Zoology, Vol. 1 of 2

Book Description

Excerpt from Handbook of Zoology, Vol. 1 of 2: Invertebrate Animals The University of Cambridge, a few years ago, directed in a more marked manner the attention of our students to the Moral and Natural Sciences, by proposing honorary distinctions to those who might excel in certain depart ments of those sciences respectively; and by requiring proof of satisfactory attention to some one at least of such departments on the part of all candidates for the degree of Bachelor of Arts, who were not aspirants for Mathe matical honours. Amongst the departments of Natural Science, Comparative Anatomy and Physiology were indicated, with special regard (as is presumed) to Zoology. A Student's Text-Book of Zoology, Vol. 1 (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from A Student's d104-Book of Zoology, Vol. 1 IN preparing the present work I have been actuated mainly by the desire to place before English students of Zoology a treatise in which the subject was dealt with on the lines followed with so much advantage by Claus and his predecessors in their works on Zoology. My original intention was to bring out a new edition of Claus' Lehrbuch, revised and brought up, to date, and a trace of this intention may be seen in a few pages of the present volume. But this plan was, for various reasons, soon given up, and the present treatise is, with the exception of about twenty pages, an. Entirely new work.
