Is the Church of Rome the Babylon of the Book of Revelation?

Book Description

Published in 1857, this is a detailed and scholarly examination of the question of biblical prophecy and its relevance to the Roman Catholic Church. Christopher Wordsworth, nephew of the famous poet, makes a compelling argument for identifying the papacy with the Babylonian empire mentioned in the Book of Revelation. Although his views may offend some, Wordsworth's thorough research and thoughtful exposition make this an important work for anyone seeking a deeper understanding of biblical interpretation and world religions. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. She Who Restores the Roman Empire

Book Description

Of The Biblical prophecy of the Whore of Babylon St. Augustine said that the Church of Rome would one day apostatize while St. Jerome hinted that the day of apostasy may have already begun, but today even many Protestants reject this notion arguing instead that a new Babylonian kingdom will arise in Iraq. She Who Restores the Roman Empire is a thorough survey of this controversial prophecy. It examines the prophetic interpretations throughout history and shows their impact upon history. It shows how the prophecy itself helped shaped the Reformation and counter-Reformation. It also discusses the newer interpretations which predict a revival of ancient Babylon or a global New Age religion. Dr. Criswell’s conclusion is based on thorough exegesis and on historical precedent. He contends that it is the Harlot who will initiate the restoration of the Roman Empire and the anti-Christ will initially be his puppet before turning on her and destroying her great city. Napoleon was an archetype of the coming anti-Christ who will promise a new world but deliver destruction. "David Criswell has done an outstanding job in handling the subject of Babylon the Harlot in the book of Revelation. As a Tyndale Seminary graduate student, he was a thorough researcher and scholar. No matter what your view on the "Babylon" issue, this book is a classic at analyzing the subject. The reader will find this treatise a fascinating adventure in Bible study." —Dr. Mal Couch, president, Tyndale Seminary

Union with Rome; Is Not the Church of Rome the Babylon of the Apocalypse?

Book Description

This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1866 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER I. WHETHEE BABYLON IN THE APOCALYPSE IS THE CITY OP EOME. The subject of our Inquiry is;-- "Whether the Prophecies in the Apocalypse1, or Revelation of St. John, respecting Babylon, concern Rome as she now is ? This Question divides itself into two parts; First; Do these prophecies concern the City in which the Bishop of Rome holds his See ? Secondly; Do they concern that City in her spiritual as well as her temporal character; that is, do they concern her as a Chubch, as well as a City ? and as exercising power, not merely at Rome and in Italy, but in many other. countries, and over many other nations, of the world ? Let us begin with the consideration of the former of these two questions, Do these prophecies concern the City Op Rome ? 1. First, these Apocalyptic prophecies, which describe the Woman who is called Babylon, and is seated on the Beast with seven heads and ten horns, do not concern the older, literal, Assyrian, Babylon. The 1 Chapters ziii. xiv. xvi. xvii. xviii. xix. B inscription on the Woman's forehead is Mystery *; indicating a spiritual meaning. This word had been used by St. John's brother Apostle St. Paul, in his description of the Mystery of Iniquity, opposed to the Mystery of Godliness': and St. John adopts the word from St. Paul, and appears to apply it to the same object as that which had been pourtrayed by that Apostle *. Again, the Babylon of the Apocalypse is described as a City existing and reigning in St. John's age5; but the literal, or Assyrian, Babylon had long ceased to be a reigning city when St. John wrote. Therefore the Babylon of the Apocalypse cannot be the literal or Assyrian Babylon. 2. What, then, is the City of which St. John speaks ? It is called by him a Gbeat City e, and it is one...

Unlocking the Mystery of Babylon

Book Description

Babylon is mention from the book of Genesis to the last book of the Bible, the book of Revelation. Who is Babylon and why is she mentioned in the book of Revelation. Babylon must have existed since the beginning until the very end of this present age. Many people have been told that Babylon is the Roman Catholic Church more specifically Rome itself. Is that true or is she just a part of what Babylon represents? What about other denominations? If there is only one way and one truth why do so many denominations exist? What about other religions of the world? Are they all part of Babylon? What power was used to crucify Jesus and is it in existence today? Who or what is the woman of Revelation chapters 2 and 12 depicting? Will God have spiritually mature people at the end? Spiritual maturity is what will keep God's people above the situations that are happening on Earth. God will never forsake His people. Please be open to receive a new understanding of the symbols that are mentioned in scripture. This book will examine several questions that need to be answered to understand how Babylon has hindered the church in her spiritual maturity. We will examined how Babylon influenced and corrupted the original intentions of God to this day. Was mankind going to be faithful to God or was man going to decide for himself whom to worship and how to worship? Was man going to go God's way or was he going to be rebellious and confused as he developed his own ways of whom and how to worship God as Babylon did? And what god was he going to worship? What system was man going to develop with their new rituals which God was supposed to accept? Mankind has always wanted to be in the place of God or be a god to his own decisions and his own way of living? Is this rebellion still on earth? What was going to happen to mankind in his rebellion? When did this rebellion start? Does the Book of Revelation reveal to us anything concerning this rebellion? Can we discern the onslaught of lies and false points of view? Will mankind ever be spiritually mature to fulfill the scriptures? These questions, along with others, will be answered as you continue to read. We individually or as a church have not reached grade twelve in maturity, but we must. Some must mature to fulfill scriptures and to see the prayers of Jesus' answered. He prayed that we would be one with the Father and one with Him. I pray that we are that generation. Once we start to understand how Satan works and how he desires to be in the place of God it is easier to see how he has influenced mankind since the beginning of time. Babylon is in religious circles but is she involved with businesses? How is this possible since most businesses are not involved with religion? Or are they? Is the whole world involved with Babylon? Today, man-made religions are all over the world. They hinder the true Word of God from going forth over all the earth. These religions stop the true seekers, the true followers from finding God and the deeper truths of God. They are hindered from spiritually maturing. Because of these religious hindrances, the whole world suffers. God is not finished. He will attain His destiny for mankind but it may not be the way we have anticipated. We must be ready and teachable to be able to understand and live through what He has in store to complete His vision. It will compel us to change as we fulfill the many scriptures that have been given for His true mature followers. I pray that you will be greatly blessed and enlightened. May the truths of God that are in this book be revealed and become pitchers of silver and apples of gold to you.
