Catalogue of a Collection of Coins of All Ages and Countries

Book Description

Excerpt from Catalogue of a Collection of Coins of All Ages and Countries: Gold, Silver, Bronze, Copper, Etc., Classic and Oriental, Greek and Roman Colonial, Syria, Egypt, Antioch, Arabia, Persia, India, Japan and China The coins of this collection are largely classic, and comprise many unusual types, from original finds made in Asia Minor by Turkish and Armenian peasants in soil which, during unnumbered generations, has been the tramping ground or highway between Asia and Southern Europe for myriads of people. These finds were purchased for Mr. Stearns by Dr. E. G. Shepard, a missionary and physician, since deceased, of Aintab, near old Antioch. The other and miscellaneous coins are largely the result of personal purchases in bazaars and curio-shops all over the world; a few only of the purchases were made at auction sales. Catalogue of the Collection of Coins and Medals of the United States

Book Description

Excerpt from Catalogue of the Collection of Coins and Medals of the United States: Formed by the Late Thomas Ramsden, of Pittsburgh, and Sold by Order of His Executors This collection is remarkable for the vast number of specimens of the regular coinage of the country - not merely for those easily obtainable but for rarities - many of the highest having example after example, as for instance the 1796 half dollars, two 1797 six 1793 cents, eighteen 1799 four, including one of the best known, etc. The gold coins are also very choice. Indeed it seems as if the collector either was so attached to his coins that he could not bear to part with even pieces that became duplicates by purchases to improve his collection, or he had enjoyed completing set after set of the silver and copper coins until he had apparently several series. Yet this assiduous collector of United States coins, Thomas Ramsden, was born September 14, 1833, in Yorkshire, England.
