Catalogue of the Magnificent Collection of United States and Pioneer Gold Coins of Mr. Charles W. Cowell, Denver, Colorado

Book Description

Excerpt from Catalogue of the Magnificent Collection of United States and Pioneer Gold Coins of Mr. Charles W. Cowell, Denver, Colorado: Including Some of the Greatest Rarities; Kellogg and Co. $50 Gold; Wass, Molitor $50 Gold; Complete Set Pikes Peak Coins, Including the 1850 $20, With View of Peak Mr. Chas. W. Cowell, now past his seventieth year, is one of the very first numismatists of this country and one of the Pioneer col lectors of the Pioneer gold coins, of which his collection is so rich in many of the greatest gems of this most interesting series.. He is a close student of the gold mint marks and of the minor varieties; and to his close study of all coins that come into his possession are due several discoveries of varieties heretofore unknown; chiefly among which is the excessively rare 1834 half-eagle with crossed four, - a variety Mr. Cowell discovered a few years ago. Mr. Cowell was most actively engaged in forming this collection years ago, and, of course, had the opportunity to secure the finest Specimens, as a careful perusal of this catalogue will readily show. While it is quite impossible to mention the numerous rarities of this collection in the preface, yet, it will not be out of place to call special attention to just a few of the greater rarities. In the pioneer series will be found some of the greatest rarities, - the Kellogg co. Gold piece, of which only thirteen specimens are known, is the gem of the collection; the Wass, Molitor and the three other varieties Of octagon gold pieces are about as fine as found; the Pikes Peak coins include the exceedingly rare 1860 and form the only and first complete set offered at auction; the Mormon coins, Miners' Bank, Norris, Griggs Norris and the many beautiful and rare Carolina and Georgia coins; also the largest collection Of California gold dollars, halves and quarter-dollars ever Offered. In United States gold, with the exception of the early half-eagles, the collection is nearly complete. And as regards the Mint Marks, this is, I believe, the most complete collection ever offered. Catalogue of the Extensive and Valuable James Ten Eyck Numismatic Collection of Rare Coins and Medals of the World

Book Description

Excerpt from Catalogue of the Extensive and Valuable James Ten Eyck Numismatic Collection of Rare Coins and Medals of the World: To Be Sold Without Reserve at Auction (All Bids by Mail) Tuesday, May 2, 1922 He always showed a great interest in the work of other collectors particularly the younger ones who like himself were deeply interested in numismatics and it it gratifying now to know that an opportunity is offered them to take from his collection valuable specimens and add them to their own. Mr. Ten Eyck's numismatic interest did not extend to the mint marks or die varieties. He was interested only in completing, the collection to represent the coinage of the United States - from its earliest Colonial period. How well he succeeded can best be attested by the numerous great rarities in the collection. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
