Book Description

Excerpt from A Discussion of the Facts and Philosophy of Ancient and Modern Spiritualism For the last three years he has lived in the same house with myself, and spent much time in the same room, thus giving me an almost unlimited opportunity to discover any deception, had he been disposed to attempt anything of the kind, or to detect any hallucination, had any existed. His moral character I consider to be, in every respect, unimpeachable. Yours, &c. Martha H. Baner. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. A Great Discussion of Modern Spiritualism, Between Prof. J. Stanley Grimes and Leo Miller, Esq., At the Melodeon, Boston, Every Evening During the Second Week in March, 1860 (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from A Great Discussion of Modern Spiritualism, Between Prof. J. Stanley Grimes and Leo Miller, Esq., At the Melodeon, Boston, Every Evening During the Second Week in March, 1860 I do not wish to be understood as presenting this, here, as an argument upon the question, but, rather, to show the respectable character of the subject which is to engage your attention, and its paramount claims upon every person who starts out upon its investigation. I am aware that Spiritualism, like every other newly developed truth, has met with the most determined opposition. It has been assailed on every side, without mercy, and, too men, the weapons of its opponents have been only ridicule, glaring misrepresentation, and vulgar-minded contempt. But it is too late in the day to use such weapons as these. Spiritualism has become so deeply entrenched in the hearts of thousands that such arguments can no longer influence the wise and intelligent, -none but the ignorant, the prejudiced, and the dishonest. In holding this discussion, I expect to meet, from my friend, a determined opposition; From his long years of experience in the realms of mental philosophy, he is competent to explode Spiritualism, if such a thing be possible. And I would here say to the audience, that should my friend find it necessary to evade my arguments or my facts should he find it necessary to cavil, or throw dust in your eyes, - understand it is not for the want of' ability to meet them, or want of information, but is owing altogether' b' the untenable position he has assumed. Talking to the Other Side

Book Description

Since its birth in 1848, Spiritualism as a religion, science, and philosophy has experienced great highs and lows. At the center of this purely American-made modern-religious movement are "mediums"--the people who are able to communicate, in some way, with spirit entities that are no longer on the earth plane. Based on three years of on-site investigation, and a plethora of data and research collected on the modern Spiritualist movement in America, Talking to the Other Side focuses upon the ethno-religious aspects of the religion, mediumship, and the mediums themselves. The first four chapters offer an expansive review of the history of religion in America, mediumship, and the Spiritualist movement. Chapters 5-7 comprise the research and data that were compiled and analyzed based on fieldwork analysis, a comprehensive questionnaire, personal interviews, and published literature on the topic of Spiritualism and mediumship. According to Spiritualist mediums, "people don't die, bodies do." Talking to the Other Side offers a contemporary look into the lives and backgrounds of the mediums who bridge this world and the Spirit world, connecting those who have passed over with those they left behind.
