Exercises for Parsing and Analysis (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Exercises for Parsing and Analysis A ruling conviction of the compilers of Exercises for Parsing and Analysis is that illustrative matter should be drawn from real literature; in this book, accordingly, the Bible, Shakespeare's works, Alice in Wonderland, Poor Richard's Almanac, Andersen's and Grimm's tales, for instance, are met with frequently. In this way the drudgery of parsing and analyzing becomes the means of recalling pleasantly a book friend already made, and of piquing curiosity as to some book not yet read. The book is designed for pupils of several classes. For those entering the eighth or ninth year of the secondary school. With some good training in grammar immediately back of them, it affords matter for one or two years of study, presenting constructions and sentences more difficult than could have been grasped before. For pupils whose study of grammar has been neglected till they are of high school age, it serves to give rapidly and concisely and with concentration of time and effort, the foundation essential for intelligent work in rhetoric and composition. For students in their last year of preparation for the College Entrance Board and the Bryn Mawr examinations in English grammar, it serves admirably for review. A. C. Practice in Parsing and Analysis (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Practice in Parsing and Analysis In preparing these exercises, the aim has been to provide simple, abundant, and worthy material for practice in the intermediate work of English grammar. Besides a few proverbs, the extracts supplying this material have been selected from standard authors alone with constant avoidance of difficult idioms and other irregular usages. In the presentation of the successive constructions, the strictest grading has been observed; for, in order to secure accuracy and thoroughness, not only the details of sentence-structure are to be learned in; progressive order, but also every word in every sentence must be parsed, at least mentally, though not every word is necessarily recited. The exercises should be taken up in the order printed, except VII, VIII, and IX; these three can be taught more readily after the development gained by some practice in analysis of sentences. Especially is this true of Exercises VIII and IX, which, indeed, if deferred sufficiently, may be quickly familiarized in sight-work in class. Analysis, Parsing, and Composition

Book Description

Excerpt from Analysis, Parsing, and Composition: Designed for Beginners The instructions are given in conversational form; and the aecom panying exercises are so arranged, that a lesson once learned, cannot be forgotten. As a guide to the analysis of sentences, a series of ques tions, the answers to which clearly indicate the office of each word; and a system of delineation, that will enable the student to dispose of each word as soon as its office has been determined, are introduced. In parsing, the delineations are also of great assistance but they should be discarded so soon as it is discovered that their use is no longer a necessity. The praxes for analyzing and parsing are kept entirely sepa rate; the paradigms are materially shortened; and the rules are made more general in their application, thus reducing their number. Numer ous exercises in composition and false syntax are also inserted through out the work, in order to give pupils a practical training, and to impress on their minds the importance of this study.
