Boats and Carriages.--The visitor to Malta will be struck on entering the harbour with the number of boats plying for hire, somewhat like Venetian gondolas, less elegant but with the same prow and sternposts, and, like the gondola, propelled by two oarsmen, the bowman rowing, the stroke oar paddling. These boats are called dghaisa (pronounced dysoe). The fare across the harbour in one of these is 3d., but to ships a shilling is charged for the return journey. Steam launches ply at penny fares across the other harbour to Sliema, and a passenger boat runs daily from Valetta to Gozo. The place of cabs or hackney coaches is taken by carrozzi (anglice, ' four-wheelers "), victorias, with a canopy above and curtains. These hold four passengers, and cost sixpence for a course in the town. It is desirable, should an extended drive be the object, to make a bargain beforehand. Churches.--The English church, the gift of Queen Adelaide, is a handsome building with a spire and a chime of very tuneful bells, both rarities in the island.
