Arabic Sociolinguistics

Book Description

In this second edition of Arabic Sociolinguistics, Reem Bassiouney expands the discussion of major theoretical approaches since the publication of the book’s first edition to account for new sociolinguistic theories in Arabic contexts with up-to-date examples, data, and approaches. The second edition features revised sections on diglossia, code-switching, gender discourse, language variation, and language policy in the region while adding a chapter on critical sociolinguistics—a new framework for critiquing the scholarly practices of sociolinguistics. Bassiouney also examines the impact of politics and new media on Arabic language. Arabic Sociolinguistics continues to be a uniquely valuable resource for understanding the theoretical framework of the language.

Ilmstitute Arabic Vol. 1: Reading Arabic Letters

Book Description

"Learn how to read the Arabic language by completing a series of 20 easy exercises!" In 2010, I found myself in the city of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ enrolled as a new student at the Islamic University of Madinah. I only embraced Islam about 2 years prior and now was embarking on my dream journey of studying the Arabic language & Islam full time in a Muslim society. Fast-forward to 2019, I not only had the privilege of experiencing life as a student for over 8 years in Madinah, but I also had accomplished what previously seemed impossible for someone like me: I graduated from Madinah's Arabic Institute as well as the College of Dawah & Theology, Alhamdulilah. Next, I found myself returning to the United States to teach what I had learned, insha'Allah. After returning to the U.S., I began teaching Qur'an, Arabic, and Islamic Studies to 5th and 6th grade students at the full-time Islamic school, Al-Furqan Academy, in Jacksonville, FL. I also took on the position of part-time Imam at the Islamic Center of Orange Park, where my responsibilities included teaching Sunday school. During this time, I faced the challenge of teaching different students at different age groups with different levels of experience and ability the Arabic language all at the same time. The following Arabic reading program is a result of the teaching method I used to teach my students how to read Arabic. It is a series of easy to do exercises that anyone can do on their own time to learn the Arabic letters and how to read, insha'Allah. I had many students successfully learn how to read Arabic in a matter of months by completing this program. I ask that Allah make this easy and beneficial for all those who intend to learn the language of His book, and I'd also like to thank all those from Al-Furqan Academy & the Islamic Center of Orange Park for giving me the opportunity to teach and for welcoming me into the community. May Allah grant you all the best of rewards.
