Excerpt from Annual Report of the Committee for Public Libraries and Museums, for the Year Ending 31st March, 1912 The total number of volumes now available for home reading is a net increase of during the year. There is, as may be expected in view of the large turnover, a consider able amount oi wear and tear with the more popular literature, and 575 volumes were withdrawn as worn out. Of these 335 were replaced with new copies and the rest cancelled. A further 16 volumes were destroyed by the sanitary inspectors, this being a precaution taken to prevent any possibility of the spread of infectious disease by means of library books. Besides re placing a large number of worn-out Volumes, and placing the Juvenile Section on a sound footing once more, the 'heavier sections of the Library have been considerably strengthened by the addition of a large number of new works, and of standard manuals of science and art.
