Lectures on the Book of Proverbs (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Lectures on the Book of Proverbs When, however, such a gift is bestowed, it must, in order to its answering its end, be bestowed discreetly - not in any such way as is calculated to produce the impression Of selfishness, or vanity, or a mercenary spirit, on the part of him who receives it. It must, therefore, be a gift in se cret, not ostentatious not such as to bring credit to o selves, and attach meanness to the other party, - credit to us for generosity, - meanness to him for selfish cupidity. There may be cases, indeed, in which the offence has been public, and in which the gift may be a public acknowledg ment and public reparation. In such cases, publicity may be called for. But there must nothing be done that either implies on our part, or seems to impute on the other, aught that is hypocritical or dishonourable. All must be open and ingenuous, -all in simplicity and godly sincerity. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Lectures on the Book of Proverbs, Vol. 2 (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Lectures on the Book of Proverbs, Vol. 2 It is probable, therefore, that the intended antithesis re lates, not so much to the actual fact of truth saving and falsehood condemning, as to the dispositions and intentions of the faithful witness on the one hand, and the lying wit ness on the other. The faithful witness delights in giving testimony that will save life - that will be salutary and beneficial to his fellow-creatures. The lying witness will, in general, be found actuated by a malevolent and wicked pur pose, having pleasure in giving testimony that will go to condemn the object of his malice. The sentiment will thus be, that truth is most generally found in union with kind ness of heart, and falsehood with malevolence. And this is natural 3 the former being both' good, the latter both evil; falsehood more naturally akin to malice, and truth to love. A deceitful witness is evidently not intended to be under stood of a witness who deceives for the good of others. A man may occasionally deceive for such a purpose 3 but this is the exception, not the rule. The deceitful man de ceives for his own advantage - while the man of truth regards not the results, whether to others or to himself 3 but, be they painful or pleasant, considers only what fidelity and veracity demand of him: not things as he may wish them, but things as they are.* Verse 26. In the fear of the Lord is strong confidence 3 and his children shall have a place of refuge. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Way of Understanding

Book Description

Excerpt from The Way of Understanding: And Other Studies in the Book of Proverbs The sermons composing this volume were preached on successive Sunday mornings to a city congregation in the industrial North of England. They are now printed practically as they were delivered, with few except verbal alterations, no attemm having been made to change their original form; it was felt in every way better to retain the direct mode of address, and even to leave an occasional colloquial phrase unreplaced by its more literary equivalent. References to such events of the day as the loss of the Titanic, the war in the Balkans, etc., have likewise been allowed to stand and these, while disclosing the date of the book as surely as the year given on the title-page, will not, it is hoped, be found disturbing by readers. The author's aim has been to te-emphasise and illustrate some of the truths for daily living gathered in the Book of Proverbs, in their application to the life of to-day, and in the light of the Gospel of Jesus Christ; if he be found to have succeeded in his re-setting of these ancient gems of wisdom, which have lost none of their lustre in the ight of the centuries, he will feel justified in offering this sheaf of practical addresses to a wider audience. The Wisdom of the World, in Proverbs of All Nations (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from The Wisdom of the World, in Proverbs of All Nations The Wisdom of the World, the golden fruit of knowledge and experience. Twenty years ago the writer began collecting these proverbs. From many thousands of those of all nations and all times, those which contain the statement of a truth have been carefully selected. Many thousands have purposely been omitted be cause they contained but half a truth or were not such as should be offered to the refined reader. Under this class came thousands of Spanish, French, German and Italian proverbs. To make them more readable they have been grouped under more than six hundred topics, which were then arranged alphabetically so that it might be easy to refer to any subject. The effort to give the authorities was abandoned, for the reason that it seemed impossible to do so with any degree of accuracy. Nearly all are credited to several persons or nations. Many sup posed to be original with modern writers can be traced back to the time of Aristotle or earlier. Since the authorities could not be given, the writer has not hesitated to change a great many, that they might the better suit the present time and system of morality. The Book of Jonah

Book Description

The Book of Jonah is a unique text in the Jewish canon. Among the shortest books in the Bible, it is also one of the most mysterious and morally ambiguous. Who is this prophet running from God, hiding at the bottom of the ocean? Why does he struggle with God's mission to save and forgive Israel's enemies? In this volume, Rabbi Dr. Yanklowitz shows that the Book of Jonah delivers a message of human responsibility in a shared world. Illuminating such contemporary ethical issues as animal welfare, incarceration, climate change, weapons of mass destruction, and Jewish-Muslim relations, this social justice commentary urges us to join in repairing a broken world--a call that we, unlike Jonah, must hasten to answer.
