Book Description

Presents findings and recommendations of a committee that reviewed the Alberta Freedom of Information & Protection of Privacy Act. The committee mandate was to determine if the Act is meeting the intent of the original legislation in balancing access to information with protecting the privacy of individuals. Committee work included a public consultation, correspondence with self-governing professional associations, and presentations from various provincial ministries and agencies. Recommendations are presented and discussed with regard to the following issues: purposes and scope of the Act; expansion of the scope of the Act; exclusions from the Act; relationship of the Act to other acts; obtaining access to records; exceptions to disclosure; rights of third parties; protection of privacy; office and powers of the Information & Privacy Commissioner; reviews and complaints; offences and penalties; fees and fee waivers; and general provisions.
