John Stevens

Book Description

Excerpt from John Stevens: An American Record Every pioneer is, by definition, the first in his field, the breaker of fresh ground, and the sower of seed. Usually, his energies are confined to one chosen field and rarely does he live to see it come to fruit. John Stevens worked in a dozen fields, not always reaching the end of the furrow but almost unfailingly foreseeing that end. Moreover, just a cen tury ago, when he was eighty, he saw his two brightest dreams come true. The Stevens steamboats were then the fastest in this country and the great era of American rail road building was at last fairly begun. It detracts nothing from his farsightedness that it should have required this additional century for men of to - day to learn how to aecom plish the engineering triumphs that he was not afraid to attempt. Behind him, he left an amazing collection of private let ters, essays, drawings, patents, maps, deeds, and contem porary newspapers, all covering not only his own days but also those of his father and his grandfather. There are the letters he received, with his laborious copies of the answers returned; the letters of many members of his immediate family, addressed to himself or to one another; and the great number of documents and pamphlets which he him self had printed or which were sent to him by scores of friends among scientists, statesmen, and all other men of mind. The whole makes a story which, for one reason or another, has appeared only by widely scattered and often quite inaccurate bits in print. Historical Collections, Vol. 35

Book Description

Excerpt from Historical Collections, Vol. 35: Collections and Researches Made by the Michigan Pioneer and Historical Society Perhaps the most noteworthy record in this volume is that of the Memorial Meeting in honor of Governor Stevens T. Mason, and the presence on that occasion of Miss Emily Mason, aged ninety years, a sister of the first governor of the state; also of his daughter, Mrs. Wright, and of two of his grandsons. The enthusiasm evoked was gratifying evidence that our people feel a deep interest in the events of the past, and of those who took part in building a new American commonwealth. Much valuable' history was recalled on this occasion. It is'also worthy of special mention that in this volume appears the record of the Society's first midwinter meeting, held in Detroit, which resulted in enlarging the knowledge of the work that is being done by the Society, in affording an opportunity to the citizens and pioneers of that city to become personally familiar with its purposes and methods. Georgia History Stories (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Georgia History Stories In this book the author has undertaken to relate what seemed to him to be the most interesting events in the history of Georgia, from the planting of the colony in 1733 to the years immediately preceding the War of Secession. The narrative, as a rule, is adapted to children from twelve to fifteen years of age; however, the author believes that it will be interesting reading for grown people, and for youths of some maturity. In several instances the author has found that the subjects treated could not be well presented in the form of children's stories. Such is especially the case with nearly all that is contained in Part III, the Development Period. In preparing this volume the author has read and studied with the utmost care a great many books bearing on Georgia's history. He has also done much original investigation. His aim above all things has been to make his work authentic and reliable. While he has tried to write in an attractive style, he has refrained from trifling with his subject - a fault too common with many writers of the so-called history stories of the day.
