Sussex Archaeological Collections, Relating to the History and Antiquities of the County

Book Description

Excerpt from Sussex Archaeological Collections, Relating to the History and Antiquities of the County: General Index to Vols. XXVI.-L In 1874 an Index to the first twenty-five volumes of the Society's Collections was compiled by Mr. Henry Campkin, and for some time past it has been felt that a companion Index to cover the second twenty-five volumes was badly needed, - the more so as many of the volumes had very scanty and incomplete indices. The aim of the compiler of the earlier Index was, in his. Own words to 'make it a readable Index.' He therefore indicated the nature of almost every entry to which he gave a reference and also gave summaries of all the contributions in the twenty - five volumes. I have made no attempt to do this, but on the other hand, while the first Index was eclectic, omitting a very large number of references to personal and place names, it has been my endeavour to make the present Index complete in these respects. A short, classified, Subject Index has been added in Which reference will be found to all contributions as well as to some of the more important subjects treated in them. There is also an Index of Contributors. The Index of Names and Places does not, I think, require much explanation. To economise space the commoner Christian names are contracted or indicated by initials, as R. For Richard, Rt. For Robert, W. For William and Wr. For Walter, and so forth. Where four or more members of the same family are referred to on one page, they are usually indexed as 'family.' An attempt has been made to bring together all the references to one family under the common est form of the name, the chief variants being indicated and cross references given where necessary, but anyone acquainted with the vagaries of mediaeval spelling will not be surprised to find that the attempt has not been completely successful. There is the further complication that in many cases the names as printed are clearly blunders; I have not considered it wise, or right, to correct these, except in a few cases where there could be no question of the proper reading. It should be borne in mind that y and i are interchange able, and that n, u and v, and also 5 and f are particularly liable to be confused.
