Edwin Bain was the son of Scottish immigrant Peter Bain. He served in the Revolutionary War and moved from Fluvanna County, Virginia to land in Greenville County, South Carolina. Edwin married Sarah and was the father of Peter Bain (ca. 1784/1794-1851) of Tennessee. Descendants and relatives lived in Virginia, South Carolina, Tennessee, Arkansas, Texas and elsewhere.

Documents, diaries, military records, family group sheets, and editorial comment reveal the origins and life of John T. Baynes. John's parents were Quakers who emigrated from the Yorkshire Dales section of Northern England to Philadelphia in 1820. John was born in Monroe County, New York. As a young man, he enlisted in the Army in May 1857 to serve in the Utah Expedition and later joined the 6th Pennsylvania Cavalry for Civil War service. Following the war in 1865, John married Elizabeth Adelia Miles; they lived in Mansfield, Richmond Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania.
