Differentiated book- It has a historical context with research of the time-In "La plaza", especially written as an introductory story to volume, the protagonist idealizes a radiant place on the mountain that he contemplates from his square. This place is a house and one day he goes to the cabin, only to find the unhappy girl Marianna, who longs to see the lucky person who lives in the white house who looks from her window. The narrator understands that he himself has been the object of a fantasy not very different from his own, and stops thinking that all idealism is an illusion. In addition to numerous biblical and mythological references, which Sealts calls "a familiar Melvillean pattern," the story alludes to Emerson's poem "The Problem," Don Quixote and Paradise Lost. The narrator points out some of Shakespeare's works."Bartleby" is in the Wall Street office of a New York lawyer, who is the storyteller. His new pale-looking employee Bartleby refuses to copy documents without giving another explanation than the repeated mantra: "I would rather not." The lawyer cannot get his employee out of his office and eventually resorts to moving. The outstanding short fiction student Merton Sealts knows references to current events.

Training our attention upon these minor characters yields major insights. In particular, the postmodern literary assessment discloses the violence encoded in texts by the privileging of the powerful and the empowering of the privileged. Moreover, the broader ties that such a character study yields connect these cannibal mothers to portraits of other pairs of biblical mothers and their plight (the two mothers before Solomon, Sarah and Hagar, Rachel and Leah) and prompt us to search for counter-stories in the biblical tradition and in our own lives opposing the violence embedded there.
