The Prophets and Kings (Yesterday's Classics)

Book Description

In this fourth volume in The Bible for School and Home series, Smyth handles the prophets TOGETHER WITH their kings, rather than discussing the kings first followed by the prophets according to the order they appear in the Bible. He treats the whole subject in bold, broad outline, exciting interest in this era through a series of biographies.

The Prophets and Kings

Book Description

Excerpt from The Prophets and Kings: Of the Old Testament That thoughts of this kind did not take much hold of Mr. Erskine, I knew. It often struck me that if he could have entered into them, he would have had greater influence over his Presbyterian countrymen; he would have understood better what their old Covenant signified; he would have been regarded less as a mere protestant against the exclu siveness of their Calvinism; his idea of God, as an Educator, would have quickened many conceptions of Him as a Ruler and a Judge which had become petrified in their minds. I was much possessed by this feeling when I first published this book. It has become deepened in me while I have considered, in reference to recent controversies about the Union of Church and State, the theories of a distinguished divine whom Mr. Erskine reverenced and loved for the geniality of his character and the warmth of his heart, whom Scotland regards as one that made her old theology in some degree palatable, or at least tolerable, to the philosophers and economists of this generation. The defence of Establishments which Dr. Chalmers put forth in his London Lectures between thirty and forty years ago, must have received many a useful cor rection, even a severe commentary, from the zeal and struggles of the writer' s latter years. These may have modified greatly the influence of it on his own country men. But for those to whom the Lectures were addressed, - for our parties in the South, - his apology had, and has still, many attractions. Joshua and the Judges (Yesterday's Classics)

Book Description

The third volume in The Bible for School and Home series, divided into two parts, the first chronicling the conquest of West Palestine under Joshua and the subsequent allotment of lands, and the second dealing with the Book of Judges where one story after another recounts instances of Sinning and Punishment, Repenting and Deliverance. All eight volumes in The Bible for School and Home series, used in Charlotte Mason's schools, are intended for parents and teachers to use in preparing Bible lessons for the children in their charge. Each of the volumes contains two dozen or more lessons, preceded by the same lengthy introduction to sound teaching practices, a section which is well worth reading. For each lesson, Smyth specifies the Biblical passages to cover, then provides background information you can incorporate in your telling of the story to gain the interest of your children, carefully framed questions you can use to draw their attention to the main points, and ways you might direct the conversation to stir their affections and their actions.

The Books of Kings

Book Description

This collaborative commentary on, or dictionary of, Kings, explores cross-cutting aspects of Kings ranging from the analysis of its composition, historically regarded, to its transmission and reception. Ample attention is accorded sources, figures and peoples who play a part in the book. The commentary deals with Kings treatment in translation and role in later ancient literature. While our comments do not proceed verse by verse, the volume furnishes guidance, from contributors highly qualified to advance contemporary discussion, on the book's historical background, its literary intentions and characteristics, and on themes and motifs central to its understanding, both of itself and of the world from which it arose. This volume functions as a meta-commentary, offering windows into the secondary literature, but assembling data more fully than is the case in individual commentaries.
