The Railroad, Vol. 1 (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from The Railroad, Vol. 1 Try's flag. They were the soldiers of civilization, open ing a way that peace might follow. Some of them passed from reconnaissances and preliminary surveys to the work of construction, ruling armies of men in wild camps which were constantly moving onward. They were responsible for the expenditure of fortunes. Their followers knew little other law than their word, and there were times, as in the early history of the Union Pacific, when no authority seemed to avail against the recklessness of life at the head of the rails. The Railways, the Trusts, and the People, Vol. 1 (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from The Railways, the Trusts, and the People, Vol. 1 In respect to Dr. Taylor, any expression of acknowledgment from the author in ordinary terms must fall far short of the mark, for the book owes its existence to the Doctor's initiative. He proposed it and he made its execution possible. The foreign investigation was also his suggestion and he bore the larger portion of the expense involved in it and also a part of the cost of the special investigations made in this country. From start to finish he has taken the keenest interest in the work, and tho he has sent some vigorous English to Boston regarding the length of time the work has taken and the space it occupies, the author deems it only fair to say, that in view of the great temptation pressing on a writer to tell all the strong facts he has at command and the ease with which almost every one of the chapters in this book could be expanded into a volume, the reader must thank the Doctor that he will not have to spend the rest of his life to find out the relations be tween the railways and the people. The book is in two parts. The first consists of twenty chapters full of vital facts from the railway history of the United States, showing the dangers and abuses that have developed, and have created the railroad problem of our day. Railroad Engineering, Vol. 1

Book Description

Excerpt from Railroad Engineering, Vol. 1: Instruction Paper A little study will show the frequent conflict of the above conditions. When a proposed location evidently combines the above interests advantageously, instead of bringing them into conflict, then there is no doubt as to the proper location, unless it affects unduly the adjacent location. The best engineering ability is a cheap investment when deciding on a location which requires a delicate balancing of the claims of several possible routes, each with its own combination of greater or less initial cost, greater or less operating expenses, and greater or less effect on the probable revenue of the road. Reconnoissance Surveys. 3. Essential Problem. From the above considerations it may readily be seen that the first survey to be made (called the reconnoissance survey) consists essentially of a broad examination of the country through which the road is expected to pass. Business considerations usually predetermine that the road is to connect certain termini and also pass through certain intermediate important towns or cities, but the problem consists in finding the best route between the predetermined points. When two consecutive predetermined points lie in the same valley or on the same bank of a river too large to be easily bridged, the location is self-evident. If the river is smaller, easily bridged, has sharp bends, with variable banks and important towns on either bank, it will usually require a close examination of each bank to determine where to cross if at all. When the two points are many miles apart, lie in different valleys, and are therefore separated by one or more summits, the selection of the best route becomes more and more complicated as the number of possible routes becomes greater. It is generally true, although not invariably, that a cross-country route which includes the lowest summits and the highest low points (such as river crossings) will give the best grades. Since the "ruling grade" is the most important physical consideration for the engineer, as will be developed later, the chief work of the reconnoissance survey (apart from considerations of probable traffic) is the determination of the elevations of summits and sags and the distance between them, together with the constructive character of the country. The American and English Railroad Cases, Vol. 1

Book Description

Excerpt from The American and English Railroad Cases, Vol. 1: A Collection of All the Railroad Cases in the Courts of Last Resort in America and England Such, I think, has been the uniform construction given to this clause by both the legislative and °udicial departments of the gov ernment. I think it will be ve ificult to find a single instance, before the present, where the egislature, since the adoption of the present constitution, have granted to a private corporation the power to exercise the right of eminent domain, exce t on condition that payment or tender of compensation shoul pre cede appropriation, if the erson entitled to it was known and of full capacity, and his tit e was free and unquestioned. There may be such instances; but if they exist, it is certain the power thus granted has never been exercised in defiance of the will of the land-owner. Under charters containing the condition above mentioned, the courts of this state have repeatedly held that the corporation acquired no right to appropriate the lands until com gensation was first made, either by payment or tender.
