The Tower of London (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from The Tower of London Daily Telegraph, and they are reprinted with the kind permission of its proprietors. My purpose was a simple one, to endeavour to interest Londoners in their own possession. I have stepped into no controversies, still less have I attempted any contribution towards settling them. If I am told that everything here said is familiar, then I shall be glad, for that will indicate a deeper knowledge by London citizens of their historical buildings and the matchless history of their city than has been disclosed to my own experience. Authorised Guide to the Tower of London (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Authorised Guide to the Tower of London House, which cost 22 and 20d., was built for it, the first elephant, it was said, ever seen north of the Alps. We hear of lions in the reigns of the three Edwards, and a little later the office of Keeper was held by men of superior rank, and sometimes b the Lieutenant. Edward III had a lion and onces; Henry VI kept lions and leopards Henry VIII had four large lions and two leopards James I baited the lions in 1604 and 1609 under Cromwell there were six lions here, and in the reign of Queen Anne, eleven, besides other animals. In 1754 they were reduced to two, but in 1796 there were four lionesses and one lion, and it is recorded that they constantly bred in the Tower. Nevertheless, by 1822, the breed was extinct. Many superstitions were connected with the Tower lions, and their death was looked upon as ominous. An old lion died just before Queen Elizabeth, and another, as was much noted at the time, two days before Charles II. The Tower of London, Vol. 1 of 2 (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from The Tower of London, Vol. 1 of 2 It would be vain to search any other city, Rome itself not excepted, for another such group of buildings, or to match the historic interest and splendid record of the ancient Norman structure. The Tower is indeed rife with interest; the most dramatic events of our country's history during more than seven hundred years have been enacted within or near its walls. To see it is to conjure up a vision of scenes, some brilliant and stately, some tragic and awful, but all full of deepest interest to the hearts and minds of Britons, to whom the history of their land is dear. Although several works - some voluminous, such as the two ponderous quartos by John Bayley, published in 182 5, and some more recent, such as the histories of the Tower by Britton and Brayley, and, more recently still, those by Lord de Ros and Doyne Bell - have appeared, I venture to think that in writing the present account of the Tower I have not undertaken a thankless or a useless task.
